So, you're "cool"?... Ya, RIGHT!...

As an old saying goes: “To be the best, you got to BEAT the best!” But today, the saying is something like: “To be called “the best”, you got to denounce the rest!”

In my schooldays, I was considered a very “uncool” guy… I never cared! My classmates thought I was ignoring them because I did not have what it took to be “cool”… But frankly, I didn’t really care for my own reasons! The reasons were clear! I did NOT believe that one did not have to use phrases like “Yo! baby!’Sup?” [OR] have spikes in their hair [OR] be a ladies magnet [OR] walk with a bit of a jerk – that too in torn jeans – to be called “cool”… I preferred being called old-fashioned and/or outdated instead! Classmates used to call me “nineteen forty-two (1942)” for my simple hairstyle, used to hate me for my frankness and truthfulness of my opinions, specially my opinions about them…

Anyways… I am not here to tell you what I was [OR] am [OR] will be! This is a blog, not my autobiography… Yet, this is my blog! I write whatever nonsense things come to my mind, and you have to take it the way it is… You are unfortunate that all you can do is comment on it, after reading… And that comment too, is in MY HANDS! which means it will stay there forever ONLY if I allow it to, or else, it will vanish in thin air whthin a click of a button!…

So, coming to the purpose, as you must have already guessed it by the heading, this is a “cool” blog – where I will tell you what “cool” means and what it should be instead –according to me, that is (Again, this is my blog)…

Let's start, then…

Gone are the days, when a man was governed by his principles and values… Now-a-days, the only thing that governs a person is how “cool” they are… Nobody wants to create a decent personality and/or a clean-cut character… Today, everybody wants to create a cool “image”… Well, images – as far as I know – are fake! And so are the millions and millions of youngsters and even the “oldies” in the Indian society…

So, I’m a part of the “cool” society – where, every guy’s actions, behaviour, dressing sense, even CHARACTER – virtually EVERYTHING depends upon how a normal “21st Century Girl” would receive him… And most girls run behind the “cute” guys, who are reputed to have a “rough and tough” image! Let me tell you a few things, people. First of all, the word “CUTE” – is NOT a male attribute… And I'm sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking! And secondly, once you see a soldier from the (Indian) Army [OR] a sailor from the (Russian) Navy [OR] a pilot from the (Israeli) Air Force in action, you’ll realize what real “tough” is! To them, the “street fighters” that almost all of the girls run after are not even equal to what a mouse is for a normal human being!

Violence and Gandhi-giri: Up to a tolerance limit, abusing or violence should NOT your style… You just can’t go around talking trash and/or beating people up… This is what maniacs do… And THIS is exactly what the so-called “cool” people do today! Can someone please justify such behaviour? NO! People just refuse to forgive and have forgotten to forget… And the tolerance limit has gone down drastically from what it used to be in olden days (or even in 1999 for that matter)… Today, the guys want to prove themselves right! And they are ready to beat anyone up for that – regardless of their age, class and place! And that’s “cool”! There are people abusing Gandhi to be called “cool”… But I say that if you worship Bhagat Singh instead, that would be much more “cool” than abusing Gandhi and his Gandhi-giri! “Gandhi-giri”, by the way, was a publicity stunt… Anyways… Let’s not get into politics and history! [I always failed in History]

”F***”: Now-a-days, a “guy” who does not abuse is old-fashioned… When we were students of 5th standard, we flinched even from the word “Stupid”! Today’s 5th “grade” students fancy using “the F-word” thrice in each sentence! Such has been the (drastic) change! And all this in a span of the past 7 to 8 years! “The F-word” is a “status symbol” for most youngsters! What I don’t understand is in what way it is cool to use an obscene word up to three distinct times in every sentence? But the trend continues – as if it’s some legacy of some national hero!

”God! Who’s that?”: Now-a-days, it’s a fashion not to believe in God… Now that’s cool, right? Oh HELL NO! If that’s cool, I’d rather be “uncool”… True that people need to stop saying believers in God are stupid or non believers are stupid! But all that I say is – “If you are an atheist; then have a reason for it! JUSTIFY yourself!” Don’t just run in the direction towards which every other loser is running… Why do you hate God? Though it is not the only vehicle, Religion can be an excellent medium for teaching morality, values and ethics… Always remember – If there is a God, I think God would prefer a moral atheist to an immoral believer… Instead of saying “This is 21st Century, man! Which world do you live in? There is no such thing as God!” to be called “cool”, try developing a CHARACTER strong enough that you have the GUTS to say “I know God PERSONALLY!” So, the next time I get this from you, try to have sufficient backup for your words, lest I take you for a ride!

On relationships: When I was in 4th standard, I remember seeing an elderly couple living in my area holding hands and just looking happy together… I loved to see them that way! It used to be so heart warming! But now-a-days, there are several “couples” around hand-in-hand, hand-on-shoulders, hand-around-waist and several other hand-combinations and looking happy together, far apart, on phone, and in all types of permutations and combinations! The best part is that the characters are always the same – and YET, the couples change every 3 months… There is no commitment, morality and most of all – CHARATER in the so-called “cool” people! It's sad when you have shared so much intimacy, friendship and emotion with someone and then have zero connection with them… Sometimes you think you know someone so well, and then they completely and utterly shock you… But who cares? “Ek gayi to doosri ayegi!” That makes me sick down to my NERVE! Frankly speaking, I care more about being successful in love and relationship than with my career… Some things in life deserve more forethought and afterthought than we actually give them…

After reading all this, some people might think: “Who cares? I’m cool! This guy is a loser!”

But I don’t blame them… I neither agree nor disagree with them… After all, I came here to write… And write I did! The reader can take action or not take action, listen to me or go to the next window, abuse me or praise me… At the end of the day, I know that I chose to make a character than to make an image! And most of all, I’m not cool! I’m not even sure if I “wanna” be (called) cool! And at times when people talk to me, they say, “Sumit Agrawal is cool!”… I just smile and say “No! Neither I am nor do I want to be! I am happy the way I am!” 

At the end of the day, I'm special, just like everybody else!

One last word before I sign off: If people were half as passionate about real life issues as they are about cricket and football, the world would be a much MUCH better place to live in!
